Sprint ST
Sprint is the name associated with Triumph's most versatile sports touring machines, offering the rider a mix of the dynamic abilities essential for more aggressive riding alongside the comfort and weather protection needed for high quality touring. For 1999 the name remains, but the bike is entirely new! The Sprint ST builds on the reputation of the outgoing model but uses the new technology learned and developed on the supersports Daytona 955i. The engine is the major link to the Daytona, being based on the sports bike's unit but retuned to suit its role in a sports touring machine. It's contained in an all-new aluminium perimeter beam frame designed with light weight and stable handling as priorities, along with ergonomics aimed at providing superb long distance comfort for both rider and passenger yet with a sufficiently sporting bias to allow easy control at higher speeds and in enthusiastic cornering. The power peak of 110PS (108bhp) delivers exhilarating speed and acceleration, while the huge spread of torque at lower rpm endows the Sprint ST with the strength in depth essential for relaxed touring even with a full load of passenger and luggage. The engine's role doesn't stop there, as it's fully integrated with the frame, adding its own rigidity as a fully stressed chassis component. The result is not only sure-footed handling at all speeds, but a significant weight saving which has kept the dry weight of the Sprint ST down to a highly manageable 207kg. The designers of the bodywork meanwhile were set four sometimes conflicting tasks: to provide better weather protection than a race replica, ensure the Sprint ST looked sleek and attractive, retain the style that has made Triumphs instantly recognisable and offer the rider class-leading ergonomics. They've achieved all of this in a package Triumph is confident will be used as the new benchmark in the class for comfort, with a look that is unmistakeably Triumph's, restrained yet individual and eyecatching with an intelligent balance between function and style, showing Triumph's deep awareness of the demands of the sports touring rider. At the same time, those values which have become associated with all of Triumph's range have merely been underlined in the Sprint ST. The build quality and finish are higher than ever, to the very best standards in the industry, ensuring genuine satisfaction of ownership. The Sprint ST is set to become the definitive sports touring machine, worthy of carrying this famous name into the next millenium.
KEY FEATURES Engine: The lightweight, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 955cc three cylinder motor is based on the Daytona 955i's unit, but has been retuned to produce 110PS (108bhp) at 9,200rpm and 97Nm (72lb.ft) at 6,200rpm, with a huge spread of torque across the rev range. The engine also features the Daytona's revised throttle bodies (5 degree instead of 12 degree butterflies) and new air bypass system, which enhance low rev control and eliminate hunting at tickover. The Sprint ST also uses the Daytona 955i's updated airbox assembly. Lotus-designed cylinder head ports for optimum efficiency. Oil cooler for improved engine temperature control. Spin-on oil filter for easy maintenance. Low maintenance bucket and shim valve train. Magnesium cam, clutch, water pump and outlet covers for light weight. Lightweight polymer sprocket cover. Cable operated clutch for additional weight saving. Sagem MC2000 electronic engine management, with automatic cold start compensation and self diagnostic capability. Reprogrammable injection mapping to match accessory performance silencer. Closed loop catalytic converter in some markets. Individual plug top coils for stronger sparks and reduced weight. Sealed battery. Precise 6-speed transmission to enhance performance and riding pleasure. Durable stainless steel exhaust headers with balancer designed to boost mid-range power. Circular section aluminium silencer with chrome end cap, height-adjustable to suit accessory luggage fitment.
Changes to the engine from the Daytona's unit are: Cylinder liners (steel instead of coated aluminium). Pistons (to match liners). Camshafts - revised lift and timing to boost midrange power EFI - engine management system is digitally remapped to match the new characteristics of the engine.
